Big Fish / Little Fish
The Big Fish/Little Fish program continues this year with an updated structure. Instead of 1:1 pairings, swimmers are now organized into Fish Families designed to strengthen connections, build team identity, and create a more supportive experience for our youngest swimmers.
This program is specifically for new swimmers age 10 & under, helping them transition into the team, build friendships, learn team traditions, and feel like an important part of the Wahoos family from the start. To help foster those connections, swimmers were grouped based on siblings, age, and existing team relationships whenever possible.
Our Big Fish play a very important role in making this program successful. Big Fish leaders will:
- Introduce themselves to their Little Fish and their families
- Help gather their Fish Family together at practices, meets, and team events
- Follow the activities outlined on the attached schedule at a minimum (supplies will be provided each week)
- Use their own creativity to build connections and make the experience fun and memorable
- Cheer for their Little Fish, celebrate their accomplishments, and help them feel included
We encourage Big Fish to use time in between practices and at team meets to check in with their Little Fish, work on the weekly activity, and get to know Little Fish parents as well. Building those relationships is an important part of creating a strong team community.
A Few Notes
The program is intended to be fun, flexible, and low-pressure. A conversation at practice, a high-five after a race, words of encouragement, or a fun team name can make a lasting impact on a younger swimmerโs experience.
Thank you to all of our Big Fish for stepping into this leadership role and helping strengthen this program in its updated format. We are excited to see the friendships, confidence, and team spirit that grow from these Fish Families throughout the season.
If you have any questions or need anything throughout the season, please donโt hesitate to reach out to me, or speak with a coach or junior coach.
Go Wahoos!
